Portoferraio
Portoferraio is the business centre of Elba and not only the capital of the island, but also of the entire Tuscan archipelago. The wide, natural harbour is where ferries from the mainland dock, carrying the majority of tourists to the area.
The beautiful old town, complete with mediaeval fortress, is located on a rocky headland.
Portoferraio has been the island's most important port for years.
Hub of the island
The former iron port (Italian: Porto del Ferro) developed over time, into an important tourist hub with an attractive harbour promenade, defensive walls and gates, lively squares, numerous shops and service establishments.
Fortified old town
Many of the city's prominent buildings can be traced back to the Medici family. A perfect example of this are the three strategically located fortresses, which were built in the 16th century to defend against pirates. They still dominate the city's landscape.
Beautiful views
Fortezza Linguella is situated at the entry to the harbour and now houses an archeological museum, which should not be missed.
Forte Stella, which is still a private residence, lies in the upper part of town, right next to the lighthouse.
Forte del Falcone now marks the border between of the historical town centre and the new town. All three fortresses have magnificent views of the old town and the coast.
Napoleon's residence: The Villa dei Mulini
In the upper town, the Medici Villa dei Mulini serves as a reminder of the banished emperor. Napoleon had the small palace turned into his townhouse and resided here during his ten months of exile from 1814-1815.
The interior houses an impressive library, which Napoleon had shipped specifically to Portoferraio. In addition to the library, certain halls with furniture from this period can be viewed.
Portoferraio's beaches
If you follow the coast of Portoferraio to the west, you will reach one of the beautiful pebble beaches. The bright stones on the beaches of Le Ghiaie, Le Viste, La Paduella shine in the water, which is ideal for taking a refreshing dip. more
