Giannutri Island
Shaped like a half moon, the island of Giannutri will bedazzle you with its unique underwater world and the ruins of imposing Roman villas. The rough rocky coast of the most southern Tuscan island sinks only twice, to form accessible bays.
Three hills add to the wild beauty of the protected limestone island. Even the Romans knew to appreciate the mild climate of Giannutri and built a harbour on the island of three squared kilometres.
Rich roman families built elaborate domiciles here. Situated in a prominent position on the island, the remains of the marble tiled Villa dei Domizi Enobardi can still be visited.
National park
The entire area of this Tuscan archipelago has been declared a national park, divided into various protection zones. Because of this, it is possible to spend the night on Giannutri, unlike the small neighbouring islands. Various private estates can be found in the less strictly protected area of the car-free island.
Paradise for divers
The waters around Giannutri are well known as a wonderful diving area. Crystal clear water, diverse underwater fauna and flora, as well as various grottos will keep any diver content. The Romans have also left their mark underwater, shipwrecks still lie in the waters surrounding the island.
