Badia a Coltibuono
The beautifully situated Badia a Coltibuono is one of Tuscany's oldest monasteries, looking back on over 1000 of history. In 1810 the convent became privately owned and today is a renowned vine-growing estate.
Surrounded by ancient forests and vineyards, the Badia a Coltibuono lies on a hill, a good 600 metres above sea level. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the typical Chianti landscape.
Former Benedict monastery
Benedict monks from Vallombrosa grounded the abbey of good harvests. Winemaking and the protection of the Medici allowed the monastery to flourish.
The church San Lorenzo, as well as the tin defense tower from the 12th century dominate the mediaeval estate. The adjoining buildings were added over the course of centuries.
In the year 1810, the monastery was closed due to pressure from Napoleon's reign and finally became the property of the family Stucchi Prinetti.
Wine within ancient walls
The beautiful garden, full of healing herbs, the old wine cellar and of course the cloister of the Badia a Coltibuono are worth seeing. The wines, which are produced on the historical estate, are made using both traditional and modern methods and enjoy a good reputation.
Strada dei Castelli del Chianti
The beautiful castle road winds through the landscape in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Clearly signposted, the road connects the region's old castles such as the Castello di Brolio. more
