Sovana
Looking at the view of Sovana, greatly influenced by reddish brown sinter, the town seems to have remained in the 13th century. Sovano is well known for its impressive remains from the Etruscan era.
Even during the Roman's rule, Sovana kept its position and even became a diocesan town. Whilst the family Aldobrandeschi was in power, the town enjoyed a period of affluence.
The castle Rocca Aldobrandesca was built during this time, its ruins still attract attention today.
Hint of the past
The atmosphere in the picturesque town is created by its historical buildings. Hardly any houses have been built since the 14th century. The small Piazza del Pretorio is surrounded by interesting buildings, including the homonymous Palazzo.
The early Romanesque church Santa Maria can also be found here. The interior, which houses many frescos, also has an interesting canopy altar, a ciborium, from the pre-Romanesque period.
Historical buildings
From the square, two cobbled streets lead to the other side of Sovana. At the edge of town stands the impressive dome San Pietro e Paolo from the 12th century.
The cathedral is accessed through a marble portal, decorated with nature themes. Cross vaults, round archways and pillars divide the interior, which includes a skillfully made font.
Traces of the Etruscans
The Etruscans left their cultural mark in the area surrounding Sovana. The famous Etruscan tombs, as well as the atmospheric lane Cavone Etrusco are amongst their famous works. more
