Festivals in Lucca
La Luminaria, the procession of the dark Volto Santo, is one of the most gripping religious festivals in Tuscany. Mediaeval traditions are also the centre of the proceedings in the crossbow shooting competition, the Palio della Balestra.
Luminaria di Santa Croce
Every year, on the 13th of September, the impressive torch procession of the wooden figure of Christ, the Volto Santo, starts the largest festival in Lucca. The residents, dressed in historical costumes carry the crucifix through the streets of the old town.
The religious procession begins in front of the San Frediano church and ends at the Piazza San Martino. Candles in windows create a mystical atmosphere. In the late evening, the day is rounded off with a spectacular fireworks display. The next day and again one week later, a large market is held.
Palio della Balestra
On the 12th of July, Lucca lives in the tradition of crossbow shooting on the Piazza San Michele. Mediaeval costumes are worn by the representatives of the city's quarters, which compete against each other.
Festa di Santa Zita
At the end of April, a flower market is held in Lucca in honour of the charitable saints.
Giacomo Puccini Festival
Opera lovers can look forward to the Festival Pucciniano, which takes place in the open air. The sea-stage of Lago di Massciuccoli hosts the operas of Puccini in the months of July and August.
The artists themselves are inspired by his famous melodies. Puccini lived in a villa by the sea, which now houses the Puccini-Museum.
