Gorgona Island
The most northerly and at only 2,5 square kilometres, the smallest island of the Tuscan archipelago, Gorgona lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Unlike the neighbouring islands, Gorgona houses a high security prison to this day.
The Greeks settled on the mountainous volcanic rock, which was attacked by pirates for many centuries.
Some buildings serve as a reminder of the previous inhabitants of the island. The Romans left the ruins of a villa; Pisan towers are a remainder from the Middle Ages.
Strictly protected
Because of the isolated location in the middle of the sea, Gorgona could develop unique flora and fauna, which can only be found on the island or in the surrounding waters.
As well as its function as a penal colony, the thickly vegetated island is part of the national park Parco Nazionale dell'Arcipelago Toscano.
