Pitigliano

Not only the architecture, but also the location of picturesque Pitigliano is breathtaking. The mediaeval city of sinter appears to be growing out of a cliff face, at a height of 300 metres.

High up at the rim of the plateau, historical houses stand, giving the appearance of having been chiseled out of the sinter. The streets are so narrow, that no cars are allowed.

From the Etruscans to aristocrats

Being built on such a chasm made city walls almost superfluous, the strategic location was ideal. Gates and defense towers offered additional protection.

Etruscans, Romans and Langobards all play a role in the city's 3500-year history. From the 14th century onwards, the aristocratic family Orsini ruled Pitigliano until the Medici took over in the 17th century.
