As people of many different nationalities settled in Livorno many years ago, a law was passed ordering the city's residents to be tolerant.
Today, the city is a cosmopolitan melting pot; people from all over the world give the place its character.

Numerous container ships and of course, ferries to Sicily, Sardinia or Corsica, as well as the Tuscan islands, can be spotted in the impressive docks. Ships are built here. There is also an immense oil refinery that consists of multiple rows of industrial plants.
