Barberino Val d'Elsa
The beautiful small town of Barberino Val d'Elsa lies in the northwestern area of the Chianti, surrounded by stone fortress walls. Its mediaeval centre was built around a strategically located castle.
The city gates and defense towers are evidence of a turbulent past.
Wine, olives and cypresses on the hills of the Chianti define the nature surrounding Barberino Val d'Elsa, which stretches over a wild, rocky and densely wooded landscape.
City gates and emblem
The main street of the town connects the two restored city gates with each other. On the market place Piazza Barberini, you can find the Palazzo Pretorio, decorated with renaissance facades.
Architectural contemporaries
The provost building San Bartolomeo and the Hospital of Pilgrims from the year 1365, both with beautiful frescos, surround the square. Many beautiful small squares complete the view of the town.
More mediaeval contemporaries surround the town on the hills in front of the city gates. Among those is the beautiful parish church of Sant'Appiano, which impresses with its Etruscan-Roman elements.
