Gastronomy

Trattoria, Osteria, Ristorante or Enoteca? When searching for a restaurant in Tuscany, you will be confronted by many different terms. They used to stand for the establishment's quality and outfitting.

Ristorante

In a Tuscan ristorante, you dine in a high-class ambience and naturally order an entire set meal. Pizza is taboo, Tuscan dishes and national specialties are on the menu. A visit to a restorante should not be hurried or stressful. The service justifies the somewhat more expensive prices- at least that is how it should be.

Trattoria

A typical trattoria is family-owned and less expensive than a ristorante. The menu has regional specialities; the decor is rustic and simple. Today, a trattoria can unfortunately be nothing more than a ristorante with a traditional front. A look at the prices will tell you what kind of establishment it is.

Osteria

The Osteria used to be the uncomplicated, simple nearby establishment, where you could enjoy a snack and meet with friends. Things have changed however; elegant restaurants call themselves Osteria and charge prices accordingly. The simple eateries can still be found, which call themselves Osteria and offer small, tasty meals at a reasonable price.

Pizzeria

In a Pizzeria, the waiter won't bat an eyelid if you only order a pizza or a pasta dish. You don't eat in typical Tuscan style here, but you do give your wallet a rest. In cities you quite often have the option of buying one slice of pizza to eat standing or to take away.

Rosticceria

Rosticcerias are open during the day and usually very good value for money. Diverse dishes such as sandwiches or lasagna can be eaten here, or ordered to take away.

Enoteca

An enoteca is a wine establishment with good regional and selected international wines. Small, tasty snacks can also usually be enjoyed.

Bar

A bar on the corner has many functions. In the morning you can enjoy a sweet pastry for breakfast and enjoy a cappuccino break. The Italian bar is a much-loved meeting place. Anyone who drinks their espresso or grappa at the bar will pay much less than at a table.

Birreria

In the evening, you not only have a wide range of beers to choose from in the birreria, you can also enjoy hot and cold meals. Italian beer is naturally much cheaper than imported beer.
