Festivals in San Gimignano
Colourful historical spectacles and processions such as the Fiera delle Messi take place in San Gimignano, the perfect location. The performances, which are held as part of the international festival Dentro e Fuori le Mura, are also very impressive.
Ferie delle Messi
The residents of San Gimignano have been celebrating the Ferie delle Messi in the month of June since the 13th century. The colourful festival was celebrated then in the hope of a good harvest. Today, you can still enjoy the mediaeval spectacle in the town's lanes and alleyways.
Armed guards patrol the city gates. Mime artists and dancers dominate the programme. Craft stands allow spectators to see how mediaeval products were made. Culinary delights are naturally part of the programme.
Every year, on the third Sunday in June, knights, drummers and heralds take part in a procession around San Gimignano.
Afterwards, a mediaeval tournament is held, in which representatives of the four old town quarters compete against each other. Armed with sticks, the chosen knights duel against each other.
International Festival
The international festival Dentro e Fuori le Mura, which is organised by the community of San Gimignano, begins in mid-June. Diverse open-air events such as readings, opera, ballet and movie screenings take place during the summer months until the end of August.
