Sights in San Gimignano

In 1990, UNESCO declared San Gimignano a world heritage sight. The view of the high towers in the middle of the mediaeval town is unforgettable. Besides the Piazza della Cisterna, the magnificent Santa Maria Assunta draws a lot of attention.

The almost windowless tower of the Palazzo del Popolo is 54 metres tall. Its height was the frame of reference for all others; no tower was permitted to be taller than the Town Hall's tower. Anyone who is not afraid of heights can climb the tower. The view over the hilly Tuscan landscape is fantastic!

Well maintained and popular old town

San Gimignano is presents itself as a very well maintained town, including both central squares, churches, museums and high towers. Narrow lanes and passageways, as well as the city walls and its five gates all create a mediaeval atmosphere.

Piazza della Cisterna

The Piazza della Cisterna, which is decorated by a beautiful fountain, is a wonderful place to sit. The high facades of aristocratic houses, which now house cafes and hotels, surround the attractive square.

The slim towers on the Piazza are proof of the competitiveness of affluent families. They were used as domestic fortresses, made necessary by the fierce rivalry between the different clans.

Collegiata Santa Maria Assunta

The Piazza della Cisterna joins the dome square behind a large archway, even though the square has to do without a proper dome. The church Collegiata Santa Maria Assunta never belonged to an Episcopal see.

The interior of the church appears as a magnificent cathedral however. Its three naves are completely covered in wonderful frescos. Masterfully crafted fresco cycles with themes from the Old and New Testament give the church its unique atmosphere.

Piazza del Duomo

The previously mentioned highest tower of the Palazzo del Popolo can also be found on the Piazza. The municipal museum can be found here today, along with a beautiful courtyard. Further palazzi with huge, 50 metre tall towers and a loggia give the dome square additional flair.

Augustine monastery

At the edge of the centre, the 13th century Roman-Gothic church of Saint Augustus, the Chiesa di San Agostino can be found. The walls of the interior are decorated with priceless frescos, which depict the life of Saint Augustine.
