Festivals in Arezzo

Arezzo's mediaeval tournament, Giostra del Saracino belongs to Tuscany's spectacular competitions. Twice a year, the town quarters face each other in a joust. The popular Festival Arezzo Wave offers musical highlights.

Giostra del Saracino

On the first Sunday in September and also on the third Sunday in July, Arezzo hosts the colourful mediaeval tournament Giostra del Saracino. At the traditional festival, the representatives of the Aretine quarters challenge each other at jousting. Dressed in historical costumes, the residents take part in a procession from the dome to the Piazza Grande.

In front of this wonderful backdrop, two representatives of the town's districts, sitting on horses and armed with a lance, aim to hit a wooden doll, the Saracino and avoid its attack.

The wooden doll is positioned in such a way, that it can turn and throw the rider from the saddle. This gives the tournament some additional excitement.

The shield of the Saracino is divided into different areas. Depending on where the riders hit, they are given a different score for their quarter.

Arezzo Wave

Every year in July, music fans meet up at the popular Arezzo Wave festival in the town's stadium- free and outdoors!

The open-air event hosts well-known Italian and international groups. Newcomers also have a chance to perform. Arezzo Wave is one of the most popular music events in Italy.
