Places of interest in Arezzo
Arezzo became well known throughout the world due to the magnificent cycle of frescos by Piero della Francesca. Surrounding the city's park Prato are the beautiful old town with the Piazza Grande, the fortress of the Medici, the parish church and the dome, which is the highest point in town.
The extremely straight street Corso Italia was built by the Etruscans and today it leads up to the dome San Donato. Wonderful glass windows and frescos, as well as a massive bell-tower, decorate the dome of Arezzo.
Piazza Grande
The baronial palaces of the Middle Ages, as well as beautiful, narrow facades with towers and wide stairways, surround the almost monumental plaza.
The Piazza Grande and the surrounding lanes create the appropriate backdrop for Tuscany's most important antique market, which is held on the first weekend of every month.
The large, historical riding festival of the city, Giostra de Saracino, has the perfect ambience for riding tournaments here.
A jewel in the history of art: Cycle of frescos
Arezzo became well known throughout the world due to the masterful depiction of the legend of the true cross by Piero della Francesca in the church with the same name. The 15th century artist worked on the choir frescos, which impress with their incomparable perspectives, for over ten years.
After years of restoration, the frescos in the outwardly simple, romantic church San Francesco are now open to the public.
Old parish church Santa Maria
The oldest church in Arezzo, Santa Maria della Pieve will surprise you with the "Tower of 100 holes", which were used as weight saving sound openings. The wonderful, stone facade of the church, with small galleries and arcades is also worth viewing.
