Festival in Massa Marittima

Twice a year, the crossbow competition Balestro del Girifalco is held in Massa Marittima.

Il Balestro del Girifalco

Anyone who travels to Massa Marittima at the end of May or on the second Sunday in August can experience the Balestro del Girifalco.

The beautiful Piazza Garibaldi in the lower town provides the backdrop to this mediaeval spectacle. The Balestro del Girifalco is still capable of getting the locals excited and is one of the most important social events of the entire year.

Dressed in historical costumes, the best archers of the individual quarters compete against each other. A model falcon (gerfalco) is the centre of attention. The archer who is able to hit this symbol of the enemy first with his balestra, is crowned the winner. And is naturally celebrated in his quarter.
