Sights in Massa Marittima
Pure, romantic Middle Ages define the lower city Citt Vecchia, which has the Piazza Garibaldi, one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany. A powerful fortress dominates the Gothic influenced Citt Nuova.
The star shaped Piazza Garibaldi has been the intellectual and cultural centre of town for centuries.
The picturesque lower town
Irregular and yet harmonic, the picturesque square attracts many visitors. Representative palaces such as the Palazzo Pretorio and the Palazzo Comunale surround the Piazza Garibaldi.
Dom San Cerbone
The south side is where the Romantic-Gothic dome San Cerbone can be found. The building's facade is clearly structured; it dates back to the 11th century. High, decorated arcades and an imposing staircase dominate the picture, from which a huge bell tower rises. The interior of the dome houses countless frescos and a font made of travertine.
Stroll along the Via Liberta
On the opposite side, the Via Liberta goes off of the main square, where bars and shops invite you to stroll along. Follow the Via Moncini, the Citt Nuova can be reached via steep stepped lanes. The young upper town was known as the miner's quarter in earlier times.
Citt Nuova and fortress
The upper town is dominated by the massive fortress complex, which was built in 1355, after Siena conquered the city. The 20 metre long Gothic bridge Arco die Senesi cannot be overlooked. It connects the fortress with the clock tower Torre del Candeliere, where you can enjoy the beautiful view.
Central Piazza Matteotti
The Citt Nuova also has a main square, the Piazza Matteotti, where the Palazzetto delle Armi, the former armoury can, be seen. The oil mill museum, Antico Frantoio can be found near the square. The two large churches, San Agostino and San Pietro all'Orto are also worth visiting.
