Piazza dei Miracoli
The Piazza dei Miracoli, the Place of Miracles, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1987. The award is fitting: in addition to the magnificent dome, the imposing baptisteries and the unique graveyard Campo Santo fascinate visitors.
The large and world famous Place of Miracles is world famous. Lively market comings and goings was not planned here, instead it was to be a holy place to get away from the daily grind.
Spiritual place in Pisa
The Leaning Tower is the most sought after photo opportunity. Three further masterworks of Italian architecture can be found in its imaginary shadow.
The wonderful Dome stands next to the Torre, which was planned to be its freestanding bell tower.
Unique building ensemble
Among the square's largest buildings are the baptisteries and the graveyard Campo Santo. The Piazza die Miracoli, which is actually a large green lawn, can be enjoyed on the northern edge of the old town.
Dom Santa Maria Assunta in Pisa
The construction of the wonderful dome began in 1064 and illustrated Pisa's economical potential. After a disastrous fire in 1595, the dome had to be fully restored.
Masterfully crafted bronze doors, statues, arcades and diverse loggias decorate the fascinating facade of the Duomo Santa Maria Assunta. Oriental elements, together with an imposing boxed ceiling and a beautiful Apsis mosaic, create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Largest Baptistery of the Christian world
The monumental baptistery was made from white marble and shows not only Roman, but also Oriental influences.
Archways and richly decorated windows characterise the impressive round building of the baptistery, which was begun in 1152. A beautiful pulpit and a hexagonal font inside the church's bright interior draw lots of attention.
Artful Camposanto
The graveyard of the nobility on the Piazza die Miracoli is very impressive and is said to be covered with soil from Jerusalem. Walls made of marble and archways on their insides characterise the graveyard.
In the 14th century, the walls were completely covered with frescos, which were mostly destroyed in air raids in 1944 however.
Museo delle Sinopie
The museum in the mediaeval hospice at the dome square houses the drawings of Camposanto's frescos.
The red chalk drawings on the walls were discovered after the frescos were removed during renovations. They now make one of the largest collections of mediaeval graphics.
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
The dome museum on the eastern edge of the Square of Miracles has many art treasures from the different European eras. The rich dome treasure includes sculptures of famous artists from the 11th until the 16th centuries such as the Madonna with Child by Giovanni Pisano.
Additionally, the exhibition houses priceless parchment scriptures, ornaments, archaeological findings, as well as famous Islamic art, which was seized from the Orient.
