Festivals in Pisa
The Gioco del Ponte and the Luminara e Regata di San Ranieri in honour of the city's patron saint make for two exuberant historical festivals, which challenge the resident's of Pisa.
Il Gioco del Ponte
Since the 16th century, a competition is held around the Ponte di Mezzo, the colourful costumes of the renaissance not withstanding. This historical spectacle is called Il Gioco del Ponte and consists of Pisans competing against each other on the bridge.
Every year, on the last Sunday in June, the team from the right side of town competes against the team from the right side of town. The representatives of the city quarters measure their strength by trying to push a seven tonne cart out of the way.
All of the equipment, costumes and enthusiasm of the participants gives the competition on the oldest bridge in Pisa a wonderful atmosphere. The winner is the team that manages to push the cart to the other team's side.
Luminara e Regata di San Ranieri
Thousands of candles are light along the Arno on the evening of the 16th of June. The old tradition created a unique atmosphere in the city and draws countless people down to the river. The Luminata marks the eve of the festival to honour the patron saint of Pisa San Ranieri.
The Regata di San Ranieri takes place each year on the Arno on the 17th of June. The individual quarters send one rowing team to compete. They race along a two kilometre long stretch of water for the honour of their quarter.
