Hiking

Anyone visiting Tuscany will cover plenty of miles, through mediaeval lanes and palazzi. It is worthwhile however, to take a walk through the region's nature, forests and fields, mountains and valleys.

The different aspects of Tuscany can be discovered during a long walk or hike. Away from all the hustle and bustle, Tuscany shows its full charm. Old, well-signposted hiking routes lead you to remote areas, which cannot be reached by car.

Northern hiking paradise

The wonderful landscape of Garfgnana in the north is known as a true paradise for hikers. The Apennine Alps and the high Apennine mountains surround the forests, fields and valleys. Both of these mountain ranges also offer beautiful hiking trails with amazing views.

Chianti region and Monte Amiata

The rolling hills of the Chianti are full of olive groves and vineyards, cypresses and old estates which will fascinate you just as much as the beautiful hiking area in the fertile region Mugello, to the north of Florence.

Diverse Maremma

The coastal landscape of the maremma is as diverse as Tuscany itself. The nature reserves can be explored via well-marked hiking paths. The backcountry of the maremma is also worth visiting: the landscape around the Monte Amiata volcano promises wonderful views.

Casentino

The amazing landscape of Casentino in Tuscany's east offers varied hikes through valleys and grand mountain landscapes.

Equipment and tips

To enjoy your hikes completely, you should remember a few things. Make sure you have good, stable shoes.

Even if the sun does not seem to be shining strongly, sun protection is a must. A large amount of drinking water is necessary, as are provisions when going to remote areas.

Guided tours

Less experiences hikers have the option of taking part in a guided tour. The competent guides will tell you all you want to know about the area, its history and development, art and culture and flora and fauna.
