Capraia Island
Even during the classical antiquity, the Island of Capraia, situated north of Elba, was lived on and fought over. It was used as a penal colony until the 1980s. Today, Capraia is an idyllic nature reservation, holiday island and diving paradise.
The 20 square kilometre large volcanic island is dominated by a mountain range, the highest peak of which is the Monte Castello (447m) in the island's south. The coastal strip is made up of cliff faces, which are sporadically interrupted by bays. Crystal clear water surrounds the island, a magnificent diving area.
Wildly romantic nature
The unique town of Capraia Isola is located above the harbour. The fortress San Giorgio, which was built directly into the rock faces dominates the town's scenery. Tourists now visit the quiet town, which was used for so long as a penal facility, especially in the summer months.
Capraia gained its name from the many goats (capra), which lived on this wild rock in the ocean.
Quiet holiday island
Accommodation is limited on the island, the only options can be found in the island's small residential area. The reason for this is that the entire island has been declared a national park of the Tuscan Archipelago. It is an oasis for hikers and those looking for peace and quiet.
