Worthwhile sights in Livorno
The old town stretches out behind the modern business quarter of Liverno. The central Piazza Grande, complete with dome, mediaeval fortress, canals, a promenade and the monument of the Quattro Mori defines the area.
Canals connect the old town to the Fortezza Nuova, a 16th century fortress, surrounded by a moat.
Within the fortress you can find a park, which is the ideal place to relax.
Canals are reminiscent of Venice
Many canals run through the old quarter, where some of the houses have been built on stakes-, which has gained the town the name Venezia Nuovo. The central Piazza Grande, with the Dome San Francesco and the busy main street Via Grande are the crossroads of the old town.
Lively streets
Lively market streets surround the large Mercato Nuovo. The classic market hall is host to specialities and gourmet Italian cuisine, as well as various fish stalls.
The landmark Quattro Mori
One of Livorno's landmarks is the expressive monument Quattro Mori (1624), situated near the old harbour.
Ferdinand I. and four galley slaves at his feet serve as a reminder of the inglorious period of slave trading.
Promenade Viale Italia
The equally important and traditional marine academy Accademia Navale and the recently renewed city aquarium are located on the winding beach promenade of Viale Italia.
Beautiful Jugendstil villas and summer residences of captain's families are dotted along the coastal street and give it its atmosphere.
