Festivals in Montepulciano

Montepulciano is host to a special festival each year at the end of August. At the historical Bravo delle Botti people compete in barrel rolling! In addition to that, the music festival Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte offers musical highlights.

Bravo delle Botti

At the end of August, barrels are rolled along the steep lanes of Montepuliano. The 8 districts of the city compete in the traditional competition, each with two representatives. Each duo tries to roll an 80 kilogram wine barrel through the lanes, up to the Piazza Grande.

The two who manage to make it up the 1,5 kilometre path first take the win home. Anyone wishing to watch the spectacle should get there early to find a good place to watch. The competition is preceded by multiple days of celebrations and historical processions.

Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte

At the yearly festival of modern classical music, the Piazza Grande is turned into a concert and theatre stage. Montepulciano's residents often take part in the performances, which are held at the end of July/ beginning of August.
