Sights in Montepulciano
The beautiful townscape with its artful palaces and churches bears witness to a turbulent past. The magnificent Piazza Grande attracts visitors, as does the church San Biagio, a jewel of the Renaissance, on the outside of the city walls.
The centre of town is the Piazza Grande, which is surrounded by impressive houses. It also marks the highest point of town and offers breathtaking views of the wonderful surroundings.
Magnificent Piazza Grande
Numerous magnificently decorated palazzi surround the large main square. The Palazzo Comunale has served as a town hall for residents for centuries. A defense tower was built onto it, from which wonderful views can now be enjoyed.
Palazzo Comunale and dome
The unfinished facade of the Duomo Santa Maria Assunta is quite sleek. However, the interior hosts, among other things, the famed and colourful Triptychon Maria Ascension by Taddeo di Bartolo (1401).
Some masters of Gothic and the Renaissance were at home in Montepulciano and left behind true art treasures. Impressive creations of the past can be found in the numerous churches and museums of the city. The church Sant' Agostino, complete with its elegant marble facade and the opposite bell tower, which has a clown figure announce the passing hours, define the picture of the city.
Madonna di San Biagio
A little way away, but easily reached from Montepulciano over a cypress boulevard, the monumental Renaissance church San Biagio stands alone. The masterpiece of the Renaissance was built in the 16th century.
