Grosseto

The capital of the Province with the same name is surrounded by the wonderful landscape of Maremma. The historical centre of Grosseto, which is completely surrounded by city walls, lies hidden in the modern new town.

The Etruscans founded the city on the river Ombrone, in the ninth century B.C.

The history of the former settlement is diverse, but one common theme throughout was the fight against the illnesses from the marshes.

Former marsh

It wasn't until the 20th century that the alluvium deposits and marshes surrounding Grosseto could be drained, allowing for the foundations of today's metropolis to be laid. Grosseto is defined by provincial flair and the usual problems of a modern city.

Sights in Grosseto

Grosseto's beaches
