Piombino
Anyone who catches a glimpse of the hilly peninsula would like to get on a ferry to go to Elba. Traditionally, iron ore is processed here. The city does also have an old port quarter however.
The city was built on a ledge, which stretches far out into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Modern buildings and the ferry port, as well as the lanes of the old town and the good shopping options, define the city of Piombino.
Metal working with tradition
Piombino's metalworking has a long history. The Etruscans and Romans were the first to smelt iron ore from Elba in the old harbour.
The town developed into one of Pisa's fortresses in the 12th and 13th century, later developing into an independent principality. Since 1814, Piombino has been a part of Tuscany. The iron industry experienced a boom and with it came the first furnaces into the town.
Old town overlooking Elba
A walk through the old town leads from the impressive fortress tower, the Torrione, through small lanes, to the open Piazza Giovanni Bovio. The square, high above the sea and port has magnificent views. The town hall, the Pallazo Comunale and the parish church Sant' Antimo, in addition to the port, are testimony of Piombino's proud past.
Shopping precinct
Behind the beautiful Piazza Verdi, the historic centre of town merges into a modern city. Plenty of shops border the busy boulevard Corso Italia and the somewhat more elegant Via Lombroso.
