Monteriggioni
The mediaeval fortress of the magical town Monteriggioni can be seen from far away. Numerous defense towers stand side by side along the massive circular wall, giving it the impression of a crown.
Modern buildings neither disturb the townscape inside nor outside of the town, which lives from its unique atmosphere.
Mediaeval flair
Situated only a few kilometres away from Siena, Monteriggioni was built in the 13th century as an outpost to the city. The unusually compact fortress was necessary to protect the city from being conquered by the Florentines, as proved by later attacks.
Monteriggioni has a very clear layout, its historical cobblestone Piazza is surrounded by a Romantic-Gothic parish church and a few houses. The town's residents offer art and crafts, as well as regional specialties and of course, wine, in a wonderful atmosphere.
View from Abbadia a Isola
Abbadia a Isola, with its formerly significant monastery is in the vicinity of the town. The Romantic 11th century Abbey San Salvatore is worth a visit. Visitors can enjoy a wonderful view from here over the vast fields to the neighbouring town of Monteriggioni.
Festival in Monteriggioni
The Festa Monteriggioni di torri si corona is one of the most famous festivals in the whole of Italy. Clowns, street performers and craftsmen gather in the fortress and create a magical mediaeval atmosphere. more
