Siena's museums
Siena has a multitude of museums. Together with the city's galleries, they display unique art treasures and educate about the culture and history of Siena and the whole of Tuscany.
Here are some of the most well known museums in Siena:
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo at the Dome Square displays works of art, which originate from the dome and monasteries of the surrounding area.
The highlight of the exhibition is the Madonna image Maest�. A fabulous view can be enjoyed from the building's outer terrace.
Archaeological Museum
The city's highest point, Piazza del Duomo, is only a few metres away from the main square. The religious centre of Siena's is full of impressive buildings, such as the historical Spedale di Santa Maria della Scale.
It served as the central hospital for over 900 hundred years; it did not close until 1980. Today, the interior houses an archaeological museum and magnificent frescos.
Pinacoteca Nazionale
The city's most important art exhibition can be found in the Pinacoteca Nazionale.
Only a few minutes walk from both of Siena's large squares, the exhibition is housed in the beautiful Palazzo Buonsignori. Hundreds of pictures portray the development of Sienese painting between the 13th and 16th centuries.
Memorial of Saint Catherine
After Catherine, the 25th child of her parents', was canonized in 1451, her parental home was turned into a memorial with a small pilgrimage church.
The head of the city's patron saint is kept as a relic in a side chapel of the basilica San Domenico.
Museo Civico
The town hall Palazzo Pubblico stands on the beautiful Piazza del Campo and houses the Museo Civico.
The representative halls of the Palazzo Pubblico are decorated with frescos by the most famous Sienese artists.
