Dome and churches

Siena's dome is one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in Italy. The dome and the other churches are a testament to the city's turbulent past. They reflect religion, power and amazing Sienese art.

Duomo di Santa Maria

During its time of prosperity, Siena wanted to leave its mark as a place of trade, banking and science. The marble covered dome to honour the Holy Mary is known as one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in Italy.

Gothic masterpiece

The impressive cathedral, complete with its zebra-striped facade was decorated excessively over the course of centuries. The high spire rises above the complex, which was actually planned to be much larger than it is.

Big plans

To trump Florence and Pisa, the dome was originally planned to only be the transept of a gigantic church.

However, the plague had grave consequences in 1348, the ambitious project could never be completed. Even today, the beginnings of the expansion can be seen.

Richly decorated interior

The interior of the dome is richly decorated: striped pillars, stars on the vaulted ceiling, 171 Papal busts, a magnificent pulpit by Nicola Pisano, Madonna images, beautiful rosette windows and frescos.

Additionally, an amazing font and a floor made of graphite and marble should not be missed.

Basilica San Domenico

The massive, sleek Basilica San Domenico from the 13th century demands attention. Its high walls dominate the surroundings.

The interior is impressive due to its unusual size. The colourful windows above the altar, as well as two depictions of the city's patron saint Katharine, are not to be missed.

One of the side chapels has the head of Saint Caterina as a relic.

Santa Caterina

After Catherine, the 25th child of her parents', was canonized in 1451, her parental home was turned into a memorial with a small pilgrimage church.

San Francesco and Santa Maria dei Servi

The church San Francesco amazes due to its numerous frescos, which can also be viewed in their Oratorio di San Bernardino.

The church Santa Maria dei Servi is situated slightly outside the city centre and has artful paintings and a beautiful view, which should not be missed.
