Greve in Chianti
Greve has made a name for itself as the urban centre of the Chianti Classico through its large market place. The town's triangular Piazza provides a stage for a lively weekly market and the yearly wine convention.
The large Piazza Matteotti is known as the nicest market place in Tuscany for good reason. The Piazza is bordered by rows of attractive houses, with massive balconies that lean over into the Piazza. They create beautiful arcades, which give the square a unique ambience.
Beautiful market place
The statue of the sailor Giovanni da Verrazzano in the Piazza Matteotti attracts lots of attention. Verrazzano, who came from Greve, landed on the east coast of America in 1524. A bridge is named after him in New York.
Cattle town Montefioralle
The mediaeval castle town of Montefioralle stands majestically on a hill above Greve. The former seat of important nobility dates back to the 11th century, even the famous sailor Amerigo Vespucci is said to have came from Montefioralle.
The Romantic church Santo Stefano can be circled by following the small town's one and only lane. The architecture, defined by arches and passageways, transports visitors into a time of long ago.
Lively wine convention
The area surrounding Greve is defined by wine making on wine estates, both large and small alike. The grapes ripen here to make the wine that is marketed under the name Gallo Negro.
On the second weekend in September, wine lovers descend on Greve for the Sagra dell'Uva. The largest wine convention in the Chianti Classico is well known for its exuberant atmosphere.

Strada dei Castelli del Chianti
The beautiful castle road winds through the landscape in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Clearly signposted, the road connects the region's old castles such as the Castello di Brolio. more
